Have you ever felt guilty after eating?
I sure have . It’s pretty sh*tty, to say the least.
“I can’t believe I just ate that.”
“OMG. OMG. OMG.” {i.e. panic, incessant thoughts, cannot stop thinking about it}
“I’m not going to eat anything for the next week to make up for this.”
“I’m going back on the plan, 100%. I can’t be trusted otherwise.”
etc., etc.
I remember the day I reached my max with guilt. I had just come off of a week long emotional eating rampage of sorts. When I finally stopped to breathe, I freaked the eff out. Of course, I started to make all sorts of promises to myself to “make up for it”. I beat myself up and said so many horrible words. I felt my spirit shrink smaller and smaller.
It SUCKED. Sucked so much that I vowed to never feel guilty for something I ate ever again.
And that was that.
But how? How do you do it? How do you actually stop the feeling from creeping it?
Feeling guilty after eating (or in general) is a feeling based in fear. The most common fear being the fear of getting/staying/being “fat”. {just perception}
Ask yourself: what am I so afraid of? Why am I afraid of it? I am afraid of _____ because ______. I would give yourself time to really think about this. Get clear.
I am going to be bold and say that whatever comes after the “because” is a lie you are telling yourself. For example, thinking you are not good enough if you weight more than x lbs is a lie. Thinking you can’t live a healthy life if you eat x once in a while is a lie.
Become aware of the lies you tell yourself. That’s the first step.
Gabrielle Bernstein says that a miracle happens when you shift your perception from thoughts of fear to thoughts of love.
Next time you feel a feeling of guilt arise you’ll be able to hear your same ol’ story. The same ol’ lies will likely pop up. At least now you know that what you’re hearing yourself say is lie. In that moment you can choose the lie, or you can choose the truth. Love=truth.
Truth is, you’re perfect, beautiful, whole.
Remember, change in this area doesn’t always happen overnight. Start with your awareness, then with your willingness to release the fear. With your awareness and willingness the shifts in perception will begin to happen naturally. Then, one day you’ll be standing in your kitchen after eating something quite indulgent, be totally unaffected without a care in the world and think, “it’s a miracle!”
